Responsibilities of a Nonprofit Board

A nonprofit board is composed of volunteers who ensure that the charity’s mission is met. The board’s duties include adopting sound ethical, legal, and legal policies for financial management and governance in addition to monitoring the nonprofit’s activities. Board members of non-profit organizations are accountable for drafting realistic plans that are in line with the organization’s mission and community requirements. This requires foresight and insight. Imagine yourself in the crow’s nest looking out for signs of storms and rainbows alike. This is especially important when there is a crisis: the loss of a major source of funding resignation or death of a key leader, a rival rising into prominence, and internal hostilities between board members.

All members are responsible for training new board members. The board must also be able to approve the hiring of an executive director, and decide the compensation. The board is responsible for reviewing the organization’s budget and ensuring it operates within its means. In addition, they are accountable for the approval of all fundraising activities.
